welcome to my party
hi unbothereds.
i have three things to say:
- my art has never been "pretty".
- there is no limit.
- i was born in the wrong era.
yes. i'm serious. riddle me this: why sit in the cage when the door's unlocked?
i was born in the wrong era.
i swear i was meant to live (and probably accidentally die) on a stage at a rock concert in 1979.
ultimately, i have absolutely no patience - especially for anything that feels inauthentic, forced, or complacent.
i started this brand because i wanted to make things that looked like they belonged somewhere other than the endless sea of things that are all starting to look, and sound the same. i wanted to bring art into the everyday.
it's borderline laughable number of times that i've been told my art doesn't match me.
so what would make it match?
naturally, my art has never been light and pretty.
i honestly surprised myself with this collection. stylistically, with all it's bright colors, and light heartedness, it was atypical for me. usually my work is more along the lines of ponder the weight of existence, and process one's darkest thoughts.
while the few people i have shown my typical work to really seem to like them, they're heavy - not all bad necessarily - but heavy.
i'm not going to drop that heaviness on all of you. at least not today.
so, if you're curious how the mind behind ubthd was formed, here's a little about me:
my mom was addressed as "the boss", while my dad loves to say he raised me like a boy. both were determined to make sure i could hold my own (and look realllllllly good while doing it).
for example, when i was four (and it was time for me to begin what would become my serial athletic career), my mom wanted to put me in the strictly girls' soccer league.
my dad enrolled me in supposed “co-ed,” which, in reality, usually meant there was maybe one other girl. an avid player himself, he wanted me playing with the boys because he thought it would make me tougher.
so i learned to get hit, be aggressive, win, and most importantly, play clean. there's nothing worse than someone playing dirty.
thanks to 8 year old me going full-on 1v1 against my 6'2" dad in the front yard, i usually played up with the boys.
on the flipside, i also did ballet for twelve years. i loved princesses. i still love dressing up. according to my mother you can't find a photo of me not in a dress before the age of 4.
finally, this wouldn't be a party without the music.
along with my baby mozart, the first songs i remember knowing every word to: all-star & animals (nickelback), get stoned (hinder), bad romance (lady gaga), and no more tears (ozzy).
it would be blasphemous if i didn't mention the constant blasting stream of aerosmith, van halen, phil collins, guns n' roses, queen, u2, elton, and ozzy, with the stones sprinkled in.
if i'm in the car, the windows are probably down, and i'll probably have my head out the window like a dog.
i'm probably going to the beach in a dental-floss bikini, and i'm absolutely getting in the water.
maybe i'll change it up, and wear it to a board meeting. who knows what i'll decide.
alone or not, i'm still going to do it all anyway. that's the energy behind ubthd.
as the og's know, ubthd started with clothes, art, and yes, the s*x toys.
then came a lot of experimenting, changing my mind, and refusing to let an idea stay an idea once i knew exactly how i wanted it to look, and feel.
today, ubthd is original artwork, vintage-inspired pocket cases, posters, stickers, custom projects, and partnerships.
some things are made to be carried.
some are made to hang on your wall.
some are made because i thought they would be funny.
some are made because they're heavy.
some are made because i couldn't stop thinking about them until they existed.
i don't really believe in making things for everyone.
i'd rather make something that makes the right person think:
yup. that's me.
so welcome.
look around.
take what you like.
collect one. collect the pair.
make it yours.
like everything else, it's whatever you make it.
what goes inside is your business.
as always - welcome to your own party.
